Getting Started in Phone Repair: A Guide for Aspiring Technicians

Most people ask me how to get started in phone repair because it seems like such a fun and rewarding job. The truth is, while it can be incredibly satisfying, it also comes with its own set of challenges. From finding quality parts to mastering the repair techniques, there's a lot to learn and experience. In this guide, I'll walk you through the steps to kickstart your journey in phone repair, sharing tips on practice, resources, and the realities of the trade.

1. You Need Tools

My suggestion for someone starting would be to get the iFixit Starter Kit. It.It has pretty much everything you need, even a lot that can be used to store screws. You’d also probably want to get a magnetic mat or my blue repair mat. These ensure you keep track of parts and screws. You can find all of these tools and more that I use Here.

2. Stay Informed and Keep Learning

The world of phone repair is constantly evolving. To stay ahead, keep watching phone repair videos online and stay updated with the latest tech trends. Channels like iFixit, JerryRigEverything, Hugh Jeffereys, Tronicsfix, Louis Rossman and others are invaluable resources. The more you watch, the more you learn.

2. Practice Makes Perfect

Nothing beats hands-on experience. Start by repairing phones for family and friends. If the repair is costly, offer to fix it at cost. If you can't fix it, they can always buy a new phone. This approach allows you to practice without the pressure of professional expectations. You can also purchase used or broken phones online and use those for tests/ attempts.

3. Sourcing Quality Parts

Finding reliable parts can be challenging, as quality varies widely. Initially, you may need to go through trial and error to find good suppliers. While most part dealers work with official businesses, you can buy parts from local shops, Aliexpress or online marketplaces like eBay and Facebook Marketplace. You can also go straight to warehouses by finding their information online or through an Agent, this will usually require larger orders so I would advise against this when starting up.

Sources like Rewa tend to provide more reliable parts, although shipping costs will catch up to you

4. Gaining Trust Through Reviews

Building trust is crucial in phone repair. Start by collecting reviews from friends and family whose phones you've repaired. Positive reviews will help you establish credibility. Encourage satisfied customers to leave reviews on social media or local business directories. These testimonials will be invaluable as you expand your client base. When you do inevitably gain clients, go above and beyond. Clean their devices, point out any issues or help them diagnose any problems. Tech is all around us and most people at one point or another need help with their tech - be the one they call. When it does come time to ask them for a review they will. Reviews are ultimately a cashless tip, they have no monetary value but will help you monetize your value.

Don’t ask, I made this with AI. At least the hands look okay

5. Manage Expectations and Learn from Mistakes: Expect to make mistakes and lose money initially. Phone repair isn't easy, but it becomes more manageable as you gain experience and start earning. Avoid taking jobs you're not familiar with until you have 1-3 years of experience. This ensures you don't damage someone's device or reputation.

6. Consider Working at a Repair Shop: Working at a repair shop can provide valuable experience and insights into the business. It's a great way to build skills, understand customer service, and learn about the industry from seasoned professionals. With this being said please provide value to the shops you work at, it’s a tough time for business owners and training can cost a lot of money.

7. The Road to Mastery: If you're serious about making a career out of phone repair, be prepared for a challenging yet rewarding journey. It's not for the faint of heart, but if you love technology as much as I do, it's all worth it.

Remember, the path to becoming a skilled phone repair technician involves continuous learning, practice, and perseverance. Good luck on your journey, and may your passion for technology guide you to success!
